White Men, Everyone Else: Gender and Ethnic Diversity on Cable News
Media Matters spent the month of April reviewing evening guests on cable news. The results, unfortunately, don’t surprise: CNN, Fox News, and MSNBC “overwhelmingly host male and white guests.”
Read through for the details as the watchdog group breaks down the numbers for each network. We learn, for instance, that “Out of 1,677 total guests, CNN had the largest proportion of men — 76 percent — during the month of April;” and “Fox News had the largest proportion of white guests — 83 percent.”
Hat tip to Chris Hayes, whose show is the most diverse in cable evening news. And getting there isn’t very difficult. “We just would look at the board and say, ‘We already have too many white men. We can’t have more,’” Hayes told Ann Friedman at the Columbia Journalism Review back in March. “Really, that was it.”

Diversity in the news is important. Unfortunately, it doesn’t look like it’s actually happening.
The breakdown hasn’t changed much either. MSNBC is the only network whose guest pool has gotten more diverse, while Fox and CNN have actually hosted even more white men.

10 Great Quotes from Francis Chan
We say things like, “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me,” and “Trust in the Lord with all your heart.” Then we live and plan like we don’t believe God even exists. We try to set our lives up so everything will be fine even if God doesn’t come through. But true faith means holding nothing back. It means putting every hope in God’s fidelity to His promises.
Our greatest fear as individuals and as a church should not be of failure but of succeeding at things in life that don’t really matter.
If life were stable, I’d never need God’s help. Since it’s not, I reach out for Him regularly. I am thankful for the unknowns and that I don’t have control, because it makes me run to God.
We are consumed by safety. Obsessed with it, actually. Now, I’m not saying it is wrong to pray for God’s protection, but I am questioning how we’ve made safety our highest priority. We’ve elevated safety to the neglect of whatever God’s best is, whatever would bring God the most glory, or whatever would accomplish His purposes in our lives and in the world.
Christians today like to play it safe. We want to put ourselves in situations where we are safe “even if there is no God.” But if we truly desire to please God, we cannot live that way. We have to do things that cost us during our life on earth but will be more than worth it in eternity.
To be brutally honest, it doesn’t really matter what place you find yourself in right now. Your part is to bring Him glory—whether eating a sandwich on a lunch break, drinking coffee at 12:04 a.m. so you can stay awake to study, or watching your four-month-old take a nap. The point of your life is to point to Him. Whatever you are doing, God wants to be glorified, because this whole thing is His. It is His movie, His world, His gift.
This is the God we serve, the God who knew us before He made us. The God who promises to remain with us and rescue us. The God who loves us and longs for us to love Him back.
God has allowed hard things in your life so you can show the world that your God is great and that knowing Him brings peace and joy, even when life is hard.
A friend of mine once said that Christians are like manure: spread them out and they help everything grow better, but keep them in one big pile and they stink horribly.
It is easy to become disillusioned with the circumstances of our lives compared to others’. But in the presence of God, He gives us a deeper peace and joy that transcends it all.

Effects Of Thinking White People Are “All Like That”:
- Literally nothing other than white people having their feelings hurt on the internet
- I’m not joking there is no real world consequence of this
Effects Of Thinking People of Color Are “All Like That”:
- Saudi student is literally surrounded by FBI for cooking rice under terrorist suspicions
- White people literally can not associate positive words with Black faces because of racism
- More white people use drugs but Black people are sent to jail for drugs at 10 times the rate that white people are
- Black people who “sound Black” earn less money than those who don’t because of associations with stereotypes. Black people who “sound Black” are less likely to get called back for jobs
- Black children grow up literally associating being Black with being bad and ugly
- White people when tested shot more unarmed Black subjects than armed and unarmed white subjects
- Hate crimes increase after Boston tragedy
- Moroccan High School Student is linked to Boston tragedy for being Brown
- Bangladeshi man is beaten by people out of racism
- NYPD Commissioner wants Black and Latino men to fear him after the police targeted literally 90 percent Black and Latino men in New York and humiliating them by frisking them in public under the assumption that they had weapons. Studies found that white men were the ones who overwhelmingly had weapons while Black and Latino men didn’t
- White people blaming and convicting Black men for crimes they never committed and everyone believing them because of racism
- Stop and Frisk, ruled unconstitutional was practiced by New York police disproportionately and unfairly affecting 90% Black and Latino men because of racism
- Universities throwing racist ‘Fiesta Party’ homogenizing culture with extreme racism
- Here are some of the numbers on hate crimes against People of Color and btw, Neo Naziism is increasing!
- Every 28 Hours an African American is Extra-judicially Murdered in the U.S.
- Black people 3 times more likely to be arrested for Marijuana
- Black people receive much harsher sentencing than white people for the same crimes do I need to go on?
But yeah, white people’s feelings :*(
It is incredibly easy to jump on “white people” for these things and say that “they” face no repercussions or ill-effects (as it is alluded to) in a larger perspective of life (presumably the U.S. is the basis of the claims here). I’ll be short: “white people” are socialized in a symmetrical sense to everyone else in the U.S. meaning that we each consume the images and ideologies broadcasted on the innumerable texts we see daily. These texts are interpreted based upon one’s socialization; if you’ve only seen Speedy Gonzalez cartoons you are likely to assume Mexican culture is to speak Spanish, drink, and sleep (these are characteristics uncharacteristic of a mouse, thus reflect the social culture of a Mexican mouse, versus the ‘inherent culture’ of a mouse liking cheese, running fast, etc.). Similarly the perpetuation of ideologies through the news reinforces stereotypes (plenty of examples above). In summation, the “white person” who you go to school with, go to work with, pass on the street isn’t the person creating these images, the stereotypes and bigotry. We are socialized to perceive the world in this way- bigotry and hate are equal opportunity. This corresponds to the claim that “white people” are doing this; the majority of those in poverty are “white,” and I would venture to say that if drug use for “white” persons is equal to or greater than that of the “Black” community then it would be interesting the look at the reasons why. I’m going to take a leap here (I don’t have my resources to reference)- being socialized in the inherently racist system of the U.S., being taught to dehumanize and hate other people, being raised to believe the world is “dog-eat-dog” is extremely stressful. It is why we, as a nation, handle denial or being point-blankedly lied to so well; it is literally easier to deal with than the truth- that we have lost our humanity in the ‘human-eat-human’ world we live in (Why do you think it isn’t expressed like that? So that you don’t question it.)
Let us be clear as I close:people succumb to racist ideologies, perpetuate them in ignorance, and teach them as the truth. “White people” are as susceptible to it as anyone who is not taught against these mainstream ideologies of race. I personally don’t believe anyone is a racist, but there are a whole heap of people who will do and say things that support the racist social structure we live in and under (we’re all in it). For we as people, let’s be more adamant about changing minds than we are about blaming others. If there was a fire you wouldn’t blame the things that got burnt for starting the flame, ya dig. Pick up the pieces (educate ourselves as a community), look to the source (direct ourselves to action against racist and classist ideologies), extinguish it, and rebuild together.

This is how Republicans blocked a vote to confirm the new EPA chief. Not a single one showed up.
Remember this as you get ready to vote in the 2014 midterm elections: it’s not just that Republicans are wrong on virtually every policy position. It’s not just that Republicans are more interested in their personal hatred of President Obama than dealing with the nation’s problems. It’s not even just that Republicans wish to do harm to the economy (see all the debt ceiling messes and the sequester) than do anything that might be perceived as helping the President.
At the end of the day, it all boils down to one simple fact: the Republicans in Congress are not even working. They’re not even bothering to act like they’re doing their jobs.
What would happen to you or me if we tried this? That’s right, we’d get fired. So come 2014, here’s our chance to fire the Republicans.
